If you want to experience wildlife, take a boat tour in this beautiful national park – plenty of birds, white face and howler monkeys, crocodiles, etc. Located 1.5 hrs away from Tamarindo, it’s a great family tour. Take a guided tour by boat into the estuary of the Rio Matapalo. The salt water jungle is protected as the Tamarindo Wildlife Reserve. In the 1,500-acre maze of narrow waterway and small islands all five of Costa Rica’s mangrove species are represented. The thickets give shelter to many species of birds and animals. Early hours are the best to see wildlife. While gliding through the waters you might spot crocodiles basking on a sand bank, or their pairs of watchful eyes peering out of the water. Snorkeling is outstanding in the crystal clear waters in front of Playa Conchal, north of Tamarindo. A white coral sand underneath gives a gorgeous turquoise color to the sea. Just offshore from Flamingo, the Catalina Islands are considered among the most attractive dive sites in Costa Rica. It is an area where divers often find themselves surrounded by large schools of colorful fish. When you dive the Catalinas, you may experience swimming with abundance of manta rays and stingrays. The formations provide a spectacular variety of marine life from nudibranchs to sharks, with angel fish, jacks, snappers, grunts, octopus and eels in between. There are several dive spots with depths ranging from 40 ft. to more than 100 ft. Visibility depends upon the levels of plankton and nutrients.
